This article deals with an outdated Ryzen generation! You can find information about the next generation here: Ryzen Zen 4 AMD has now won a considerable market share with the Ryzen CPUs.
Last but not least, the Ryzen 3000 models based on Zen 2 contributed to the great success. After all, even the current Intel generation still can’t hold a candle to these processors in applications.
With the Zen 3 generation, aka Vermeer, AMD now wants to grab the last segment that Intel still has: the gaming sector. Despite the really convincing performance from AMD, Intel is still ahead, especially in the single-core performance that is important for most games.
But thanks to Zen 3, that should now be the end of it. And AMD has really achieved these ambitious goals! So the Ryzen 5000 models are probably always the best choice at the moment – whether for gaming or applications.
Directly to the new AMD Ryzen 5000 CPUs in price comparison If you want to know more about the new AMD Ryzen Zen 3 generation, we have put together an informative FAQ with all the important questions and answers about the new AMD CPUs.
What is Zen 3?
After Zen, Zen +, and Zen 2, Zen 3 is now the fourth generation of successful AMD Ryzen processors. Contrary to what was originally assumed, the new CPUs are not called Ryzen 4xxx, but Ryzen 5xxx.
The reason for this is that some AMD Ryzen APUs and notebook CPUs based on the Zen 2 architecture are already on the market and are named Ryzen 4xxx. In order to show more clearly that this is a new generation, the new CPUs are called Ryzen 5xxx.
When can you buy the new Ryzen 5000 CPUs?
AMD confirmed November 5th as the start date in the preview of the new Ryzen generation. So far, however, they have not yet arrived in large numbers on the market.
Unlike the previous generation, only one 16-, 12-, 8- and 6-core will be launched. Other models will follow later but have not yet been named.
What Zen 3 processors will there be and how much do they cost?
For the release on November 5th, four CPUs will sing at the start. Two Ryzen 9, a Ryzen 7 and a Ryzen 5. In terms of price, the focus is less on the predecessors and more on the competition from Intel. The smallest CPU, the Ryzen 5 5600X, will be available for around 300 euros.
A whopping surcharge compared to the Ryzen 5 3600X. The situation is similar for the three stronger CPU models. Some of these cost significantly more than the previous models. cores threads 16/32 64MB 3.4/4.9GHz 105W 12/24 64MB 3.7/4.8GHz 105W 8/16 96MB 105W 8/16 32MB 105W 8/16 32MB 65W 6/12 32MB 3.7/4.6GHz 65W 6/12 32MB 3.5/4.4GHz 65W.
The Ryzen APUs codenamed Cezanne, which have an integrated graphics unit and are therefore ideal for high-performance office PCs, are relatively new to the market. coresthreads 8/16 16MB 3.8/4.6GHz 65W 8/16 16MB 3.8/4.6GHz 65W 6/12 16MB 3.9/4.4GHz 65W 6/12 16MB 3.9/4. 7GHz 65W
What are the differences from the previous Zen generations?
Compared to the third Ryzen generation, the manufacturing process is taken over from the Matisse refresh series. The main focus is on improving efficiency, performance and slightly increasing the clock.
In addition, the AM4 socket should continue to be used, which apparently limits the clock somewhat. According to AMD, the Zen 3 core will be completely revised and redesigned. If you want to go into more detail, we recommend this article on Computerbase.
How does Zen 3 perform in benchmarks?
The official tests show that AMD hasn’t promised too much. Zen 3 is up to 20 percent faster than Zen 2 – even more, depending on the application and game. But in the Intel domain of single-core performance, AMD consistently shows better performance with the Zen 3 than the current tenth-generation Intel Core models.
Thus, Zen 3 has now pushed the competition from the throne in games as well. The additional performance in games in a direct comparison of AMD Ryzen 9 5900X and Intel Core i9-10900K is in the single-digit range – mainly because of the now better single-core performance. It looks similar in applications, but the gap is larger there.
So AMD has delivered and is currently the ultimate for games and applications with Zen 3! In our live CPU ranking, you can see how the new models rank in terms of performance for gaming and applications. The new AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is currently the fastest gaming CPU!
What socket and chipset will Zen 3 need?
AMD attaches great importance to compatibility and thus continues to rely on Zen 3 on the AM4 socket. Accordingly, there will be no new chipsets for mainboards. Mainboards with a B550 or X570 chipset are officially recommended.
But some B450 and X470 mainboards will also support the new CPUs, but not with the full range of features as with the current chipsets.
Do I need a new motherboard for Zen 3?
That depends on whether you already have a board that supports the new Ryzen generation via BIOS update. Anyone who owns a B550, X570, or A520 motherboard can easily use the new Ryzen 5000 models with such an update.
But older boards with B450 and X470 chipsets are also compatible with the newer processors – according to the current status, all models from Asus, ASRock, Biostar, Gigabyte, and MSI. So all relevant manufacturers have also promised support for the older chipsets.
Features such as the new XFR technology (Extended Frequency Range), PCIe 4.0, and the higher number of PCIe lanes will only be able to be supplied by mainboards with the new B550 and X570 chipsets. XFR, the turbo or automatic overclocking function of the previous Ryzen generations is now called PDO and stands for Precision Drive Overboost and, similar to XFR, ensures an increased work clock of the CPU depending on the cooling and load.

Which RAM is optimal for Zen 3?
It’s not official yet, but Zen 3 will probably support RAM natively, like Zen 2, with up to 3200 MHz. However, all mainboards allow significantly more via overclocking (e.g. XMP profile). We recommend DDR4 dual kits with 3600 MHz and CL16 timings for the best value for money.
Our RAM recommendations are 32GB (2x 16GB) Crucial Ballistix DDR4-3600 memory and 32GB (2x 16GB) G.Skill Ripjaws V Black DDR4-3600 CL16 (F4-3600C16D-32GVKC) Best offer of: 100.00 € incl. Which CPU cooler should I buy for an AM4 motherboard?
AMD uses an automatic overclocking function on the Zen3 CPUs, which depends on the cooling capacity of the CPU cooler. The better the cooler, the higher the CPU can automatically overclock itself.
Therefore, in the best-case scenario, you should use a good cooler. Both air and water coolers can be used here. Depending on what you prefer and, above all, what fits into the existing housing. Our price comparison offers a variety of different cooling solutions for AM4 CPUs.
